Milan Sunday Antique Market – mercato antiquariato

In Milan, there is a huge antique market in Naviglio area on the last sunday of every month (except July). There are around 400 booths set up along side the Naviglio canal from ponte di via Valenza to viale Gorizia (more than 2km in total).

There are many things to choose from, clocks, watches, jewelry (costume and real), clothes, hats, sunglasses, ceramics, chinaware, cutleries, sculptures, coins, stamps, crystal vases, glasses, radios, furnitures, old records, binoculars, coins, stamps ..etc. Some of the stalls do accept credit cards and most of the time you should be able to bargain a 10% to 30% off quoted price (of course you will get a better bargain w/ cash). However, you must be careful as not all the sellers there are honorable. Two months ago, a woman tried to sell me fake Chanel earrings and necklaces and told me it was the real 80’s Chanel accessories. Luckily, I do know how to distinguish the real from the fake.

There is a vast difference in price range for the things selling in these stalls, ranging from 10 euro for a 1980’s shirt to 200,000 euro for a Roman helmet. But overall the prices are quite reasonable, e.g. 140 euro for an old, good conditioned typewriter. Some of the stalls do have shops in other cities and they are happy to provide you with certificates of authenticity of your purchased items.

Some of the stall keepers do not allow clients to touch their merchandise and they will put up a sign “Non Toccare” meaning “Don’t touch”. So it is always better to ask for the permission before you handle the goods.

This market is opened from 09:00 to 18:00 and to go there, you can take the metro green line to Porta Genova or tram: 2, 3, 9, 29, 30 or bus : 47, 74, 90, 91
